Giving to Enhance the Adams Institute
Priorities for Giving to Ralph N. Adams Institute. The following are priorities for giving that would greatly benefit the activities of the Adams Institute:
- Unrestricted Support of Institute Operations. Unrestricted contributions to the Institute will support faculty, research scientists, and graduate and undergraduate students involved in Institute research, and help to publicize their accomplishments. This type of flexible support is critically important for the future success of Institute programs. Additional contributions can be targeted toward addressing the following priorities:
- Adams Scholars These fellowships would attract outstanding young scientists to pursue research as postdoctoral associates in Bioanalytical Chemistry at KU. Anticipated stipends for the Scholars will be started at $35,000 plus fringe benefits. These post-doctoral fellows will be selected on an annual basis from applicants solicited from throughout the world. The Scholars will select their faculty mentor after interviewing at KU. No more than one Scholar will work in a research group at any given time. Scholars will be appointed for a term of two years, meaning that one new Scholar will be appointed each year.
- Adams Fellows. These fellowships will be used to attract outstanding students to KU for graduate study in the area of Bioanalytical Chemistry. The fellowship will consist of a competitive stipend, $25,000 per year, tuition, fees and insurance, and will be of sufficient length for outstanding students to complete their degrees. Fellows will be selected in June of each year and open to students finishing their first or second year of graduate study. Each fellowship will last for three years, meaning that two new Fellows will be appointed each year. NIH Training Grant Programs are one vehicle for funding part or all of these stipends. Our department has successfully supported and taken the lead in efforts to obtain funding for Training Grant programs in the past.
- Undergraduate Research Awards. These funds will support four undergraduates in academic year or summer research. The analytical chemistry group has one of the strongest track records of involving undergraduates in research among our faculty. Input from our undergraduates indicates that these opportunities are clearly life changing experiences in the careers of young chemistry majors. Full summer support for an undergraduate researcher amounts to about $6,000.
- Kuwana Graduate Fund. These funds will support the Division of Analytical Chemistry in their efforts to recruit the highest quality graduate students, and to create recruiting materials to support this effort. Dr. Kuwana, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry, has followed in the footsteps of his mentor, Dr. Adams, in supporting all aspects of graduate education in the Chemistry Department.
- Adams Symposia. The purpose of the annual symposium is to highlight developments in Bioanalytical Chemistry by eminent scientists from around the world, and act as a showcase for work produced by Institute researchers.
- Scholar in Residence Program. The Scholar in Residence program will provide resources to attract eminent scholars (mainly faculty) to KU from around the world for an extended summer or academic year stay. This program will allow the Scholar to lecture, write, participate in center research and develop collaborative proposals with Institute faculty.
